Syracuse, NY- In the first year of the AHL All-Star Game's new format, in which the league's four divisions faced one another in a round-robin tournament, the Central Division squad, featuring Lake Erie Monsters center T.J. Tynan, came away champions. The Central finished the tournament 2-1-0 and defeated the Atlantic Division side 4-0 in the Championship game. A first time All-Star, Tynan enjoyed his experience and the new format. "It's cool to meet the guys you always play against and hear about around the league," said Tynan. "The 3-on-3 was a ton of fun and I think all the guys really enjoyed it...I just tried to have fun out there. Our team had a lot of special players and it was a great experience getting to play with them."
Individually, Tynan led all scorers in the tournament with five assists. Pat Cannone of the Chicago Wolves was named MVP with three goals, including a shootout game-winning score. Michael Leighton of the Rockford IceHogs led all goaltenders with a .929 save percentage.
The Monsters' mascot Sully and Mullet Brother Captain Nick also enjoyed the weekend, despite their loss in intermission musical chairs to the Charlotte Checkers mascot, Chubby.
Next up for the Monsters, it’s a Friday road clash vs. the Charlotte Checkers with full coverage underway, live from Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC, at 7:00 pm on ESPN 850 WKNR and the Monsters Hockey Network.
