Barracuda Sink Monsters, 6-2

Gerbe, Scott score, Kivlenieks stops 32 as Monsters fall to 1-1-0-0 on seven-game road trip.

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the San Jose Barracuda on Friday at SAP Center in San Jose, CA by a final score of 6-2. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 20-30-4-3 overall this season and with a .412 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

Cleveland grabbed a 1-0 lead on Friday when Nathan Gerbe struck for an even-strength goal at 4:47 of the opening period on feeds from Jordan Schroeder and Sam Vigneault. Then, an Adam Helewka power-play goal at 9:18 of the first leveled the score at one for San Jose before the Barracuda claimed their first lead at 12:10 of the period with an extra-man finish from John McCarthy. The Monsters tied the game at two heading into the second period, however, with a Justin Scott five-on-five finish at 12:51 set up by Brady Austin and Joe Pendenza.

In the middle frame, McCarthy notched his second of the game for the Barracuda at 3:28, an even-strength marker that made it 3-2 San Jose through 40 minutes of play. The third period saw the Barracuda strike for two quick goals at even-strength, courtesy of Rudolfs Balcers at 4:40 and Brandon Mashinter at 5:30, respectively, to make it 5-2 before McCarthy posted a five-on-five hat-trick finish at 14:58 to cap the scoring for San Jose in a 6-2 Barracuda victory.

Cleveland’s Matiss Kivlenieks fell to 11-17-2 in net this season despite stopping 32 shots on Friday while San Jose’s Antoine Bibeau improved to 17-11-2 this year by virtue of a 30-save performance.
