Camper Plays Hero as Monsters Race Past 'Runners in OT, 2-1

Cleveland’s Matiss Kivlenieks notches first pro win in net as Monsters top Tucson

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Tucson Roadrunners in overtime on Friday at Tucson Convention Center Arena in Tucson, AZ by a final score of 2-1. With the win, the Monsters improved to 5-3-1-0 overall this season and with a .611 points percentage, currently rank alone in third place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Roadrunners grabbed a 1-0 lead at 2:04 of the first period when Michael Bunting wired home his second score of the season at even-strength, but Cleveland defenseman Brady Austin pounded a left-point slapper past Tucson net-minder Aidin Hill at 6:42 to level the score at one apiece thanks to Paul Bittner’s lone five-on-five assist.

After a scoreless middle stanza and final frame, Rocky River, OH native Carter Camper ended the game at 3:56 of overtime thanks to an even-strength assist from Jordan Schroeder that delivered the Monsters a 2-1 victory in the first-ever meeting between Cleveland and Tucson in the two teams’ franchise histories. Monsters net-minder Matiss Kivlenieks improved to 1-2-1 this season by virtue of a 20-save performance that earned the rookie his first professional win, while Hill stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced to fall to 1-1-1 between the pipes for Tucson.
