Forsberg's 37 Stops Stonewall Wild as Monsters Prevail, 4-0
CLEVELAND – The AHL’s defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Iowa Wild on Sunday in front of 11,395 fans at The Q by a final score of 4-0. With the win, the Monsters’ season-best fifth consecutive victory, Cleveland improved to 32-27-3-4 overall this season and with a .538 points percentage, currently sit tied with the Charlotte Checkers for fourth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.
After a scoreless opening period, Cleveland’s Sonny Milano posted his team-leading 16th goal of the season at even-strength, thanks to breakaway feeds from Markus Hannikainen and Ryan Stanton at 7:20 of the middle frame. Then, at 4:28 of the third, a miscue by Iowa net-minder Alex Stalock led to an even-strength finish for T.J. Tynan, thanks to Hannikainen’s lone assist.
Later in the final period, Cleveland rode a pair of empty-net goals, from Justin Scott on helpers from Nick Moutrey and Stanton at 16:21, and from Hannikainen courtesy of John Ramage at 17:13, to claim a 4-0 victory. Cleveland backstop Anton Forsberg stopped each of the 37 pucks he faced to improve to 22-15-3 between the pipes with his third shutout performance of the campaign, while Stalock fell to 19-16-7 in net for Iowa despite stopping 27 of the 29 pucks he faced.
