Monsters Battle Back in 4-3 Loss To Rampage

SAN ANTONIO, TX  The AHL’s defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the San Antonio Rampage on Sunday at AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX by a final score of 4-3. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 27-25-3-4 overall this season and with a .517 points percentage, remain alone in fifth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.
The Rampage claimed a 1-0 lead on Sunday when an even-strength Gabriel Bourque tally beat Monsters goaltender Anton Forsberg at 7:22. Then at 15:27, San Antonio’s Rocco Grimaldi utilized a power-play to double the Rampage lead to 2-0 heading into the middle stanza.
Cleveland cut the Rampage lead in half with a Marc-Andre Bergeron power-play goal at 13:31 of the middle frame on feeds from Sonny Milano and Dean Kukan, but San Antonio’s Alex Belzile tallied a shorthanded goal minutes later at 16:34 to push the Rampage edge back to two goals at 3-1. Cleveland rallied with a buzzer-beating score, however, from Joe Pendenza at 19:51 courtesy of a visionary right-wall assist from Milano and a secondary helper from John Ramage.
In the third, former Monster Colin Smith posted a power-play marker at 16:08 to push the Rampage lead to 4-2 and despite an even-strength Alex Petan goal at 18:08 fromAkim Aliu and Pendenza, the Monsters fell short by a 4-3 final score. Forsberg made 29 saves in defeat to fall to 18-13-3 overall this season while Joe Cannata stopped 16 of the 19 pucks he faced in net for the Rampage to improve to 12-6-4 this year.
