Monsters Clipped by Rampage, 4-3

Cleveland drops see-saw battle on home ice in front of 12,140 fans and 500-plus dogs at The Q.

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the San Antonio Rampage by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday in front of 12,140 fans and 523 dogs on ‘Pucks and Paws’ Night at The Q. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 24-39-7-3 overall this season and with a .397 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

San Antonio grabbed a 1-0 lead on Sunday when Andrew Agozzino buried a shorthanded chance at 14:40 of the opening frame before Cleveland leveled the score at one with an even-strength Brady Austin tally at 16:42 thanks to Calvin Thurkauf’s lone assist.

In the middle stanza, Agozzino struck again for an even-strength marker just 44 seconds into the period to claim a 2-1 lead for the Rampage, but the Monsters drew even once more with a Jefferson Dahl even-strength tally at 13:30, assisted by Grant Besse and Phil Lane. The Rampage pulled ahead late in the second, though, when Samuel Blais executed a five-on-five conversion at 18:47 to make it 3-2 San Antonio through 40 minutes of play.

In the third, Thurkauf tied the game at three for Cleveland with an even-strength goal, assisted by Spencer Naas, at 0:43 of the period before Rampage defenseman Ryan Graves proved to be Sunday’s hero as he supplied a game-winning even-strength goal at 19:24 of the frame to deliver San Antonio at 4-3 victory.

Cleveland net-minder Matiss Kivlenieks stopped 27 of the 31 shots he faced on Sunday to fall to 13-20-4 this season while Rampage backstop Adam Werner stopped 21 of the 24 pucks he saw to improve to 1-0-0 this year and capture his first-career AHL victory.
