Monsters Clipped by Wild in Overtime
CLEVELAND – The AHL’s defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated in overtime by the Iowa Wild on Saturday in front of 13,810 fans at The Q by a final score of 1-0. With the overtime defeat, the Monsters are now 20-18-2-3 overall this season and with a .523 points percentage, remain alone in fifth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.
After the first three periods slid by scoreless, a five-minute, three-on-three, sudden-death overtime period saw Iowa’s Zack Mitchell pot the game’s only goal at 3:37 of the extra session to deliver the Wild an extension to the team’s franchise-record winning streak, now a stretch of six consecutive victories.
Cleveland goaltender Brad Thiessen earned third star honors in defeat, stopping 23 of the 24 pucks he faced to fall to 1-3-1 in net for the Monsters this year while Iowa’s Steve Michalek earned his first shutout of the season and improved to 9-9-1 between the pipes for the Wild by virtue of a 17-save performance.
