Monsters Drop Tight-Checking Tilt in Ontario, 5-3

Schroeder posts pair of points as Kivlenieks denies 28 Reign shots in hard-hitting road defeat.

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Ontario Reign on Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA, by a final score of 5-3. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 22-37-7-3 overall this season and with a .391 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Monsters grabbed a 1-0 lead on Saturday when Calvin Thurkauf posted an even-strength goal at 9:40 of the first period on feeds from Ryan Kujawinski and Jordan Schroeder before Sean Walker equalized for the Reign at 17:43 of the opening frame with an extra-man strike that tied the game at one.

In the second, the Reign grabbed their first lead at 9:24 by virtue of a Matt Moulson even-strength goal but Cleveland’s Miles Koules tied the game at two with a five-on-five finish at 12:05, assisted by Paul Bittner and Garett Cockerill. The Reign hung tough, however, and re-claimed their advantage at 3-2 with another Moulson tally, this time at even-strength, at 13:07 of the middle frame.

The third period saw Ontario push their edge to 5-2 with an even-strength Austin Wagner tally at 16:17 and an empty-net marker from Michael Mersch at 18:18, but the Reign claimed a 5-3 victory after Schroeder deposited a late five-on-five goal past Ontario net-minder Scott Wedgewood at 18:48, courtesy of assists from Doyle Somerby and Bittner. Cleveland goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks fell to 13-18-4 this season despite a 28-save performance while Wedgewood improved to 3-0-1 for the Reign by virtue of a 30-save showing.
