Monsters Earn Point in 4-3 OT Loss to Barons
Three first period goals helped the Lake Erie Monsters (18-16-4-3) earn a point in the standings and extend their point streak to four games, but the Monsters fell short Friday night in a 4-3 overtime loss to the league-leading Oklahoma City Barons (29-10-2-3) at Cox Convention Center. Andrew Agozzino scored for the fourth straight game, while Paul Carey and Joey Hishon also added goals for the Monsters. The Monsters continue their three-game road trip tomorrow in Oklahoma City at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
Joey Hishon opened the scoring for the Monsters when he snapped a shot top-shelf from the right circle for his 11th goal of the season at 7:15 of the first period, giving the Monsters a 1-0 lead with assists to Andrew Agozzino and Tomas Vincour. Paul Carey stretched the Monsters lead to 2-0 on a goal that was reviewed and ultimately counted for the Monsters at 11:44 of the first period, assisted by Ben Street and Colin Smith. Carey's goal was his 11th goal of the season.
Andrew Agozzino would be the next Monster to 11 goals on the campaign when he scored for the fourth straight game at 18:57 of the first period. Agozzino took a feed in the slot from Tomas Vincour with the Monsters on a power play, and snapped a shot quickly past Oklahoma City all-star goalie Richard Bachman. Hishon also assisted on Agozzino's power play goal.
Oklahoma City's Greger Hanson scored the only goal of the second period, pulling the Barons to within 3-1 on a snap shot from the slot at 13:50 of the frame.
With 9:55 left in the third period, Brad Hunt one-timed a shot from the right point that sailed past Pickard to pull the Barons to within a goal, cutting the Monsters lead to 3-2.
With 55 seconds left in the third period and the Oklahoma City goalie pulled in favor of an extra attacker, former Monster Matt Ford scored from the top of the right circle to tie the game at 3-3 and ultimately force overtime.
At 5:00 of overtime Jordan Oesterle tapped in a loose puck after Ford had hit the goal post, securing a 4-3 overtime win for the Barons.
Pickard stopped 29 of 33 shots and is 8-6-4 on the season. Richard Bachman stopped 25 of 28 shots and is 14-3-3 in net for the Barons.
