Cleveland grabbed a 1-0 lead on Saturday when Sam Kurker posted his second goal in as many games at 11:23 of the first, an even-strength marker set up by Alex Broadhurst and Dean Kukan. Then, at 14:46 of the opening period, an even-strength Zac Dalpe finish, provided by helpers from Terry Broadhurst and Alex Broadhurst, pushed the Monsters’ lead to 2-0. Late in the opening stanza, Rockford’s Tomas Jurco netted a power-play strike at 18:18 to pull the IceHogs within a goal through 20 minutes of play.

In the middle frame, the ‘Hogs tied the game just 15 seconds into the period, courtesy of a Matthew Highmore five-on-five finish that lead to an even-strength Miles Koules goal, assisted by Carter Camper and Cameron Gaunce at 10:42, that pushed the Monsters back in front by a score of 3-2. Rockford again scratched back to tie the game though, when Tyler Sikura blasted a sharp-angle chance past Cleveland net-minder Joonas Korpisalo at 15:51.

After a scoreless third period and overtime frame, Anthony Louis converted for Rockford in the first round of a three-round shootout, and after Korpisalo and IceHogs backstop Collin Delia denied each of the remaining shooters they faced, Rockford emerged victorious by a 4-3 final score. Despite stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, Korpisalo fell to 1-1-1 in net for Cleveland this season, while Delia improved to 2-4-0 between the pipes for the IceHogs by virtue of a 29-save performance.
