Monsters Fall to Griffins, 5-2

Broadhurst, Camper score in first meeting between Cleveland and Grand Rapids this year.


The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI by a final score of 5-2. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 9-14-3-2 overall this season and with a .411 points percentage, currently remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Monsters grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period on Friday when Alex Broadhurst took advantage of an even-strength Zac Dalpe and Nick Moutrey setup just 22 seconds into the game, and Carter Camper followed suit with a five-on-five finish at 9:08, courtesy of feeds from Miles Koules and Cameron Gaunce. The Griffins rallied with an even-strength Dylan McIlrath goal at 14:07, however, to make it 2-1 Cleveland through one period of play.

In the middle stanza, the Griffins rattled off three even-strength goals in a span of less than one minute, thanks to Matt Puempel at 2:13, Matt Ford at 2:53, and Eric Tangradi at 3:05, respectively, to carry a 4-2 lead over the Monsters into the final frame. In the third, Tangradi struck again at even-strength at 1:53 of the period to cap a 5-2 Griffins victory.

Matiss Kivlenieks fell to 4-8-2 in net for Cleveland despite stopping eight of 11 shots faced in 22-plus minutes of action before Monsters net-minder Ivan Kulbakov made 14 saves the rest of the way. On the other side, Grand Rapids’ backstop Jared Coreau improved to 9-8-2 by virtue of a 27-save performance.
