Monsters Fall to Rockford on Opening Night
CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday by a final score of 4-0 in front of 12,115 fans at The Q in the first game of Cleveland’s 2017-18 season, the team’s 11th in Northeast Ohio. With the loss, Cleveland fell to 0-1-0-0 overall this season and with a .000 points percentage, currently sit tied for second place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.
The IceHogs grabbed a 1-0 lead with the first period’s lone goal, an even-strength tally by Tomas Jurco at 1:23, before Rockford extended their edge to 2-0 with a shorthanded Viktor Svedberg goal at 9:28 of the middle stanza. In the third, the ‘Hogs pushed their advantage to 3-0 with a power-play score at 14:27 from Matthew Highmore before a Ville Pokka empty-net goal sealed a 4-0 win for Rockford at 17:50.
IceHogs net-minder Jean-Francois Berube improved to 1-0-0 on the season by virtue of a 32-save shutout performance, while Cleveland goaltender Brad Thiessen fell to 0-1-0 despite stopping 18 of the 21 pucks he faced on Saturday.
