Monsters Ground Gulls in Overtime, 2-1

Schroeder forces OT, Gaunce tallies game-winner as Kivlenieks stops 23 in comeback victory.

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the San Diego Gulls in overtime on Tuesday at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, CA by a final score of 2-1. With the win, the Monsters improved to 20-29-4-3 overall this season and with a .420 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

After a scoreless opening period, San Diego grabbed a 1-0 lead at 3:45 of the middle frame when Giovanni Fiore netted an even-strength goal. In the final stanza, Cleveland’s Jordan Schroeder leveled the score with a shorthanded marker at 9:04 that eventually forced overtime thanks to feeds from Nathan Gerbe and Garret Cockerill. Monsters blue-liner Cameron Gaunce then went on to net the game-winning score just 18 seconds into the extra session with Zac Dalpe and Alex Broadhurst collecting assists on the play.

Cleveland net-minder Matiss Kivlenieks improved to 11-16-2 this season by virtue of a 23-save performance on Tuesday, while Gulls backstop Reto Berra fell to 13-7-1 despite stopping 32 of the 34 pucks he faced.
