Monsters Hook Barracuda

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the San Jose Barracuda on Saturday at The Q by a final score of 4-1. With the win, the Monsters improved to 2-2-0-0 overall this season and with a .500 points percentage, currently sit tied for third place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Monsters claimed a 1-0 lead in the game’s first minute when Carter Camper posted an even-strength marker 35 seconds into the action on feeds from Markus Hannikainen and Tyler Motte. In the middle frame, Cleveland doubled their advantage at 12:56 when John Ramage scalded an unassisted five-on-five wrister past San Jose net-minder Troy Grosenick to make it 2-0 for the home team.

In the final stanza, Brandon Bollig pulled the visitors within a goal at 2-1 with an even-strength finish at 1:57, but Miles Koules netted his first of the season at 8:25, thanks to power-play helpers from Dean Kukan and Motte that pushed Cleveland’s edge to 3-1. An empty-net finish from Motte at 19:07, set up by Alex Broadhurst and Cameron Gaunce, ultimately sealed a 4-1 win for the Monsters in the first-ever meeting between Cleveland and San Jose in the two teams’ franchise histories.
