Monsters Outlasted by Gulls, 3-1

Koules scores Cleveland’s lone goal, Monsters tie single-game season high with 45 shots on net.

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the San Diego Gulls on Friday at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, CA by a final score of 3-1. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 22-36-7-3 overall this season and with a .397 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Gulls grabbed a 2-0 lead with back-to-back even-strength goals from Mitch Hults at 2:43 of the middle frame and Kalle Kossila just over three minutes later at 6:09. Miles Koules cut San Diego’s lead in half at 10:08 of the second thanks to power-play feeds from Justin Scott and Cameron Gaunce, but the Gulls rebounded with an even-strength Keaton Thompson goal at 12:27 to take a 3-1 edge into the final stanza, and after a goalless third period prevail by that same final score.
