The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the San Antonio Rampage on Thursday at AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX by a final score of 4-2. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 8-10-2-2 overall this season and with a .454 points percentage, currently remain alone in fifth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Rampage grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period on Thursday when A.J. Greer potted an unassisted even-strength goal in the game’s opening minute at 56 seconds of the frame, and Dominic Toninato followed with a shorthanded score at 7:51. Cleveland responded, however, with a five-on-five finish from Miles Koules at 12:01 to make it 2-1 Rampage heading into the middle stanza, thanks to assists from Carter Camper and Sam Vigneault.

In the second period, Nick Moutrey tied the game for Cleveland with an unassisted shorthanded tally at 5:51, but the Rampage reclaimed the lead at 9:10 with an even-strength marker from Chris Butler to make it 3-2 San Antonio through two periods of the play. A Samuel Blais power-play goal at 17:51 of the third period was the final frame’s lone score and sealed a 4-2 win for the Rampage in the first of four games between San Antonio and Cleveland this season.

Monsters goaltender Ivan Kulbakov fell to 0-2-0 in net this season despite stopping 29 of the 33 pucks he faced, while Rampage backstop Ville Husso improved to 4-3-0 between the pipes by virtue of a 23-save performance.
