Monsters Storm Back In Third to Top Wild in OT, 5-4
Siebenaler lifts Cleveland to overtime, Broadhurst nets winner in dramatic home victory.
The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Iowa Wild in overtime on Wednesday at The Q by a final score of 5-4. With the win, Cleveland improved to 9-11-3-2 overall this season and with a .460 points percentage, remain alone in sixth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Monsters claimed a 1-0 lead in the first period on Wednesday when Sam Vigneault buried a five-on-five chance thanks to Calvin Thurkauf’s lone assist, but Iowa rallied with three unanswered goals, from Mario Lucia at 8:22 on the power-play, Sam Anas at even-strength at 11:34, and Kyle Rau with the extra skater at 15:16, to take a 3-1 edge into the middle stanza.
In the second, Cleveland drew within a goal when John Ramage and Doyle Somerby combined to set up Jordan Schroeder for an even-strength tally at 5:26 that made it 3-2. Iowa, however, battled back to extend their advantage to 4-2 with an even-strength Luke Kunin goal at 12:57 of the stanza.
In the third, Paul Bittner drew the Monsters within one at 4-3 with an even-strength finish at 14:17, provided by Justin Scott, before Blake Siebenaler netted his first marker of the campaign at even-strength at 15:44, on feeds from Alex Broadhurst and Zac Dalpe, to push Cleveland into overtime tied at four. In the extra session, the Monsters claimed a 5-4 victory with a three-on-three Broadhurst goal at 3:39, thanks to Dean Kukan’s lone helper.
Cleveland’s Ivan Kulbakov stopped six of the nine shots he faced in the first period before Matiss Kivlenieks improved to 4-6-2 between the pipes for the Monsters by making eight saves the rest of the way in relief. On the other side, Iowa net-minder C.J. Motte is now 2-1-2 in goal following a 27-save performance.
