Monsters Streak Past Icehogs, 5-2

Dalpe nets game-winner, Broadhursts extend point streaks as Kivlenieks stops 33 in victory.

 

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Rockford IceHogs at BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford, IL on Saturday by a final score of 5-2. With the win, Cleveland improved to 17-26-4-3 this season and with a .410 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

After a scoreless opening period, Cleveland claimed a 1-0 lead when Calvin Thurkauf buried an even-strength goal at 3:47 of the second period, thanks to feeds from Zac Dalpe and Brady Austin. Then, at 5:23 of the middle stanza, Miles Koules struck for a power-play marker thanks to assists from Jordan Schroeder and Sam Vigneault before Dalpe made it 3-0 Monsters with a shorthanded strike at 8:29, assisted by Alex Broadhurst. The IceHogs rallied late in the second though, with back-to-back even-strength tallies from Graham Knott at 12:50 and Henrik Samuelsson at 18:39 to make it 3-2 Cleveland through 40 minutes of play.

In the third, the Monsters reinforced their lead with a five-on-five Jordan Schroeder tally at 1:35, courtesy of assists from Nathan Gerbe and Garret Cockerill, to make it 4-2 Cleveland before Terry Broadhurst capped a 5-2 Monsters victory with an empty-net goal, assisted by Jordan Maletta and Austin at 18:58. Cleveland net-minder Matiss Kivlenieks stopped 33 of the 35 pucks he faced on Saturday to improve to 10-14-2 in net this season while Rockford’s Jeff Glass fell to 10-5-2 this year despite a 23-save performance.
