Monsters Upend Griffins on Home Ice

CLEVELAND – The AHL’s defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday at The Q by a final score of 4-1. With the win, the Monsters improved to 25-23-3-4 overall this season and with a .518 points percentage, currently sit alone in fifth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Monsters grabbed a 1-0 lead with the opening frame’s lone goal, an unassisted Sonny Milano tally at 15:13 that came at even-strength. In the middle stanza, Griffins right wing Martin Frk tied the game with an even-strength blast at 7:10, but Cleveland’s Joe Pendenza grabbed the lead back for the Monsters just seconds later when the former UMass-Lowell River Hawk poked a five-on-five rebound past Griffins net-minder Eddie Pasquale at 7:35 with Alex Petan and Dillon Heatherington collecting assists on the play.

In the final period, Monsters captain Ryan Craig pushed the lead to 3-1 with an even-strength deflection of a Zac Dalpe shot from the top of the right circle at 8:28 with Jaime Sifers supplying the secondary assist. Then, at 11:31 of the frame, Pendenza parlayed a neutral-zone turnover into a shorthanded breakaway goal on Dean Kukan’s lone feed to establish Cleveland’s final margin of victory at 4-1.
