Monsters Upended by Admirals in Shootout, 3-2

Cleveland earns five of six standings points in three straight games vs. Milwaukee.
 

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated in a shootout by the Milwaukee Admirals on Wednesday at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena in Milwaukee, WI, by a final score of 3-2. With the shootout loss, the Monsters are now 7-4-2-2 overall this season and with a .600 points percentage, currently sit alone in third place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

The Admirals claimed a 2-0 lead in the first period of play, notching even-strength goals from Harry Zolnierczyk at 10:18 and Bobby Butler at 14:46, respectively. In the middle frame, Cleveland’s Joe Pendenza cut Milwaukee’s advantage in half with an even-strength finish, on feeds from Alex Broadhurst and Dean Kukan at 6:40, that made it 2-1 Admirals heading into the game’s final stanza.

In a hard-fought third period, Cleveland leveled the score at two with an even-strength goal from Broadhurst, assisted by Zac Dalpe and Doyle Somerby at 15:26, that ultimately forced overtime and eventually a shootout. Milwaukee net-minder Anders Lindback stopped 39 of the 41 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, and stopped three Monsters shooters in the shootout, to improve to 9-3-0 this season, while Cleveland goaltender Brad Thiessen stopped 18 pucks prior to the shootout and two of three in the shootout to fall to 4-1-3 this year, yielding the decisive shootout attempt to Butler in the top of the third round.
