Monsters Winning Streak Halted by Checkers, 4-1

CLEVELAND – The AHL’s defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers on Thursday at The Q by a final score of 4-1, bringing an end to Cleveland’s season-long six-game winning streak. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 33-28-3-4 overall this season and with a .537 points percentage, currently sit alone in fifth place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Checkers claimed a 2-0 lead in the middle stanza thanks to a shorthanded goal from Connor Brickley at 1:17 and an even-strength Andrew Miller tally at 7:14 of the period. In the third, Philip Samuelsson pushed the Checkers’ advantage to 3-0 with a power-play strike at 4:20 before former Checker Zac Dalpe poked home a five-on-five marker for Cleveland, from T.J. Tynan and Ryan Craig, at 4:56. Charlotte tacked on an even-strength Danny Kristo score, however, at 12:43 to emerge victorious by a final margin of 4-1.

Monsters net-minder Anton Forsberg fell to 23-16-3 this season despite a 21-save performance, while Tom McCollum stopped 30 of the 31 pucks he faced to improve to 8-1-1 between the pipes for Charlotte. Next up for the Monsters, it’s a Saturday road clash vs. the Chicago Wolves with full coverage, live from Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL, underway at 8:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
