Pendenza Pots Two as Monsters Outlast Moose

WINNIPEG, MB – The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, earned their first victory of the 2017-18 season on Friday, thanks to a 4-3 win over the Manitoba Moose at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, MB. With the triumph, the Monsters improved to 1-1-0-0 overall this season and with a .500 points percentage, currently sit tied for third place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

Moose defenseman Julian Melchiori delivered Manitoba a 1-0 lead with an even-strength goal at 16:40 of the opening period before Calvin Thurkauf tied the game at one at 2:04 of the second with an unassisted five-on-five marker, his first professional tally and point. Later in the middle frame, Northeast Ohio native Carter Camper pounded home a power-play goal from Hayden Hodgson and John Mitchell at 15:08, but Manitoba quickly leveled the score at two with a Jack Roslovic goal at 15:41.

Cleveland’s Joe Pendenza took advantage of a five-on-five setup from blue-liners John Ramage and Cameron Gaunce at 16:30 of the second to give the Monsters a 3-2 lead, but an even-strength Patrice Cormier breakaway score leveled things for the Moose at three apiece at 1:42 of the third. Later in the final period, a five-on-five goal from Pendenza gave Cleveland the edge yet again, thanks to Miles Koules’ lone assist, and Pendenza’s second score ultimately proved to be the game-winner in a 4-3 Monsters victory.

Cleveland net-minder Brad Thiessen improved to 1-1-0 between the pipes for Cleveland by virtue of a 26-save performance while Moose goaltender Michael Hutchinson fell to 1-1-0 in net for Manitoba despite stopping 29 of the 33 pucks he faced.
