Roadrunners Race Past Monsters 5-1

Schroeder scores for Cleveland in defeat in front of 11,392 fans at The Q.

The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Tucson Roadrunners in front of 11,392 fans at The Q on Friday by a final score of 5-1. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 18-29-4-3 overall this season and with a .398 points percentage remain alone in seventh place in the AHL’s Central Division standings.

Tucson grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:06 of the first period on Friday when Trevor Murphy tallied an even-strength goal before Cleveland tied the game with a five-on-five finish from Jordan Schroeder at 13:50 thanks to assists from Jacob Graves and Scott Savage.

In the middle stanza, the Roadrunners struck for four unanswered goals, including a Mario Kempe power-play strike at 7:12, an extra-man Kempe finish at 8:07, a Michael Bunting even-strength tally at 10:23, and yet another Kempe score, again on the power-play at 13:41, to take a 5-1 lead into the final frame. After a scoreless third, Tucson claimed victory by that very 5-1 margin thanks to a hat trick from Kempe and five assists from former Monster Carter Camper.

Cleveland’s starting goaltender Jeff Zatkoff allowed four goals on 16 shots faced in 30-plus minutes of action to fall to 1-3-1 this season before Matiss Kivlenieks stopped six of the seven shots he faced the rest of the way. On the other side, Tucson net-minder Adin Hill improved to 14-10-2 by virtue of a 24-save performance.
