Sergei Bobrovsky went 9-1-1 with a 1.09 GAA and .967 save percentage in the month of March. Those numbers earned him the National Hockey League’s Second Star of the Month honors. Bobrovksy is also the Professional Hockey Writers Association Blue Jackets nomination for the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy. The award is given annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The Masterson trophy winner is selected at the conclusion of the regular season.
Columbus recently assigned prospects Gabriel Carlsson and Kole Sherwood to the Monsters. Carlsson, a 2015 first round (29th overall) selection in the NHL Entry Draft, made his American Hockey League debut on April 1st as the Monsters visited the Chicago Wolves and tallied his first AHL point that same night with an assist on a Zac Dalpe goal. Sherwood made his professional debut on April 2nd in Iowa.
After their experience in the Calder Cup playoffs last season, the Columbus rookies, including Monsters alums Zach Werenski, Lukas Sedlak, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Joonas Korpisalo, and Josh Anderson, are looking forward to a new challenge, The Stanley Cup Playoffs. "I'm sure the NHL playoffs are going to be different than the post season games I've seen… I'm just excited to get a taste of it. I've heard the fans here are unbelievable, that it's a different atmosphere in the playoffs, so I'm definitely excited for that,” Anderson told BlueJackets.com.
Werenski continues to have a stellar rookie campaign, leading all NHL rookies in +/- with 17 and ranks 7th in rookie scoring with 47 points.
On March 21st the Blue Jackets signed a trio of players with Monsters connections to two-year contract extensions. Lukas Sedlak, Scott Harrington, and Markus Hannikainen are all contracted through the 2018-19 season. Hannikainen currently leads the Monsters in goals with 17.
