Tony's Take: Week 3

With the annual whirlwind that is the July 1st start to free agency now behind us, the Cleveland Monsters emerged with a pair of matching one-year AHL contracts on the books for veteran goaltender Brad Thiessen and puck-moving defenseman Garret Cockerill, coincidentally both former Northeastern University Huskies.

Limited by injury, Thiessen appeared in only nine games for the Monsters supplying a 4-2-2 record with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .884 save percentage. Cockerill, meanwhile, distinguished himself as a versatile, offensive-minded blue-liner since his mid-season arrival in Cleveland last year, posting three goals and 14 points in the first 40 appearances of his AHL career.

Columbus was anything but a spectator on the first day of the 2018 free agent period, as the Blue Jackets inked versatile center Riley Nash to a multi-year contract and added three defensemen on a two-way NHL/AHL basis.

Tommy Cross – D

The captain of the AHL’s Providence Bruins for the past three seasons, Connecticut native and former Boston College Eagle Tommy Cross, 28, joins the Columbus organization for his seventh professional season on a one-year deal.

Dillon Simpson – D

A sturdy presence on the back end, former Edmonton Oilers draft choice (2011 – 4th Rd., 92nd overall) Dillon Simpson, 25, joins the Jackets on a two-year pact following four seasons with the Oilers’ AHL affiliates (Oklahoma City Barons, Bakersfield Condors).

Adam Clendening – D

A 25-year-old right-handed defenseman, Adam Clendening joins the Blue Jackets following a season in which the former Boston University Terrier competed for the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes, and the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners and Rockford IceHogs. A former second-round pick (Chicago, 2011, 36th overall), Clendening has spread his 86 career NHL appearances across four seasons (2014-18) and six NHL clubs (Chicago, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, New York Rangers, Arizona).
